S/v Zingaro makes it to Cayman Islands, and we take it easy with a little kiteboarding and diving. The Kittiwake was a really cool wreck to dive, and Kimmi’s first freedive! She did amazing! Little fish. After that’s all over we realize we’ve got a little problem …

¡Adios Mexico! | Sailing Zingaro – Episode 10

Check out our tour of the bottle island. It’s a really amazing adventure we had in Isla Mujeres, Mexico. An island floating on nothing but used plastic bottles? How sick is that! RichArt, a British artist, is really a master of recycling. All the little details in his house…

We had a lot of fun with him and the guys from Project Atticus. But after the island and our sail were fixed, it was time for us to leave Mexico. So the Captain took me (Kim) out for my first real sail. WOHOOO! It was a nice one…

Say Guten Tag to my new editor! | Sailing Zingaro – Episode 9

Kimmi’s first episode! Yup, she edited this entire thing. I’m very proud!

In this Episode Kim joins the Zingaro Crew and we take the boat from Isla Mujeres, Mexico, to Cozumel. Unfortunately Cozumel was a paradise for cruise ships and not cruisers. Expensive compared to the rest of Mexico and no authentic tacos to be found … A nightmare for Kim!

Luckily we got to meet some French-Canadian sailors on a 30′ boat (with 5 people, one Mom, and one dog). They are living the pirate kind of life even more than we are. It ended up bring days of singing and sailing with a bunch of beautiful people aboard.

Fixing the boat after running aground | Sailing Zingaro – Episode 8

If you like the how-to vids here’s a really fast walkthrough of a month in the boatyard to repair my bottom.

We fixed the damaged spots, rebuilt the daggerboards, and generally refit the boat. It was a ton of work, everyday 10-12 hours. I lived in the yard during this whole operation. But she’s ready to go! Also, a suprise paint-job!

Let me know what you think!

Diving in Cancun and we CRASH the boat! | Sailing Zingaro – Episode 7

Melissa and I sail from Cayman to Isla Mujeres, Mexico, see the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, and Cancun. I meet some crazy Mexicans on the beach and they sing me a song. We say goodbye to Mel and welcome Angela as crew. We sail to Cozumel, Tulum, and Punta Allen – beautiful diving on the way. Then we ground the boat …

Couple gets adopted by crazy locals in Cayman Islands! | Sailing Zingaro – Episode 6

Aloha guys!

This episodes includes all the details of what happened when the Zingaro Crew left the wonderful Cuban waters and sailed to the Cayman Islands. It was a beautiful sail and the people that Melissa and James met when they arrived were even more beautiful.

Because what made the experience on the island so special were not the intact reefs, the regional food, the thousand jewelers or the tourist traps. It was the local, Mister Denton, that took them in and showed them Grand Cayman as only a crazy fisherman can do.

Enjoy!

Six months of sailing | Sailing Zingaro – Episode 5

Months of joy and moments of horror… Grounding the boat, losing both rudders, ripping the sails… It certainly was not an easy trip so far. But the rewards I got were incredible: freediving the kittiwake in the Cayman Islands, seeing the sun set over the mountains in Jamaica, cruising the Colombian coast and, of course, the San Blas Islands, Panama!

Solo sailing to southern Cuba | Sailing Zingaro – Episode 4

Sailing solo to the southern archipelagoes of Cuba. Freediving, spearfishing, sightseeing… Explore Nueva Gerona with me as I take you into a real Cuban restaurant where the food is $1 (and fantastic)!

We welcome a new crew member. Welcome Mel! And get the boat off the bottom …

New Years Eve in Key West | Sailing Zingaro – Episode 2

I sailed solo for 7 days, rounding the western Cape of Cuba, and sat on the concrete in a plaza for 6+ hours to upload this. Enjoy!

We continue where we left off: I broke the rudder, as well as my macbook, autopilot, and phone. Everything gets fixed in this episode (except my iPhone, I’m going to throw that in the drink, watch for that video!). I go diving with friends, meet up with 2 crew members who are going to Cuba with me, and we sail down to Key West, Fl for new years eve!

Solo sailing to the keys & the 6 minute refit | Sailing Zingaro Episode 1

Finally done with the first episode! Super exited to share this. Flew from Hawaii to Ft Myers, Florida to look at a catamaran, and ended up living there for 2 months while refitting and getting her ready for sea. It was tough, and a great learning experience. I’ve video-documented much of the process, and will be putting out detailed how-to videos, maybe they will help someone in their journey.
